Féile na Samhna

The 9th annual Féile na Samhna will take place in Swinford this Bank holiday weekend October 26th to 28th.

Sessions in local pubs. Events free unless otherwise stated.

Saturday 26th:

Singing workshops – English and as Gaeilge –  with Kathryn and Seamus Tiernan.

11am to 12pm – Primary school children. 12noon to 1pm – Post primary students & adults Venue Swinford NS

Newly composed tune Competition : 12pm in the Gateway

Everyone welcome to come and hear at least 13 wonderful musicians perform their “Tunes for Swinford”

3.00pm:  Fáiltiú and the official opening in the Gateway Hotel will be followed by a very interesting and entertaining interactive presentation with tunes and a chat, “Traditional Music – The power of place”. This will be facilitated by Martin Conlon.

8.30pm : Oíche Amhránaíochta. Enjoy a night of singing, storytelling, recitation and caint in the Meeting Room at Melletts of Market Street.

Sunday 27th

5.00pm: Everyone is cordially invited to “The Rambling House” in The Gateway Hotel. There will be a great party with music, singing and dancing, storytelling and recitation. Everybody who comes to visit and celebrate will be treated to a traditional Irish welcome with the best of traditional fare – we’ll even make boxty! The theme this year focuses on the importance of home to returning emigrants.  “Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin”

Monday 28th. 

11.00am: Finish the weekend with an enjoyable and informative historical walk around Swinford with Michael Comer. This year our focus is on the famine and the places in Swinford associated with it. Short dramatic scenes enacted by The Railway Players and friends.  We will have a cuppa and a chat to bring Féile to a close.

Swinford Indoor Market

Swinford Indoor Country Market will be open for business on Saturday November 2nd between hours of 9.30am and 2pm.  There will be a large variety of handcrafted, homemade and locally produced goods including honey, Jams, homemade breads, pastries, quiches, eggs, Dexter beef and seasonal vegetables. Crochet and knit garments, toys and novelty hats, bespoke tote bags and zero waste products. There will also be Organic candles and melts, wellness products, jewellery, orgone, pictures, family tree frames, cards, felted goods, Usborne books, wooden carvings and boxes, floral displays, plants and much more. A free instore competition will be running, simply sign in on the day for a chance to win a €20 voucher to spend at next month’s market.

Traders are taking orders for Christmas; customers be advised to order soon to avoid disappointment.

 

Buildings of Mayo Photo Exhibition

This touring photographic exhibition is visiting Swinford Cultural Centre this month. It promotes the publication of the Mayo survey of the built heritage of the county. The Photo exhibition will take place from October 12th 2019 Until October 25th 2019. It will also be open for people to view during Library hours from 12pm-5pm Tuesday to Friday (Except when the hall is booked for classes/events). All welcome. FINISHES THIS FRIDAY.

 

Síamsa Sráide, Street & Arts Festival – TV Broadcast

The IMAYO TV Show will be broadcasting two episodes featuring highlights of the Síamsa Sráide, Street & Arts Festival 2019 on Sky Showcase Channel 192 or Freesat 161. The first episode will be broadcast on October 24th at 7pm with episode two on October 31st at 7pm. Highlights will include the Hamilton Flute Band, Phil Coulter, Cliona Hagan and much more.

 

Befriending Programme.

Mayo North East are looking for volunteers to befriend 3 Syrian families in Swinford. The volunteers will assist the families in home management and social activities. Two people will visit the families for 1-2 hours a week at a time that suits the families. Volunteers will be required to take part in an interview, Garda vetting and 2 training sessions. Volunteers must be over 18.

Swinford Go Getters

Swinford Go Getters are a social activities club for over 55’s who meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month. We play a variety of games including Boccia, bucket ball and parachute games. We also play skittles, ball and bean bag games which are part of the Go for Life Games designed to provide gentle exercise. You decide what you enjoy and you can try a variety of games or stick to one, it’s up to you. From time we add new games and are open to suggestions and new ideas. All games are designed to be played sitting or standing.
We are always looking for new members and if you would like to help out in any way, we would be happy to meet you. Just come along to any of our games mornings or call us on 087 904 9723

Meetings take place in the Gateway hotel at 8pm on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of the month. If you are looking to take up a new hobby, why not try photography? Come along to a meeting and see if you’d like it. As always, new members are always very welcome, especially beginners.
