Darkness into Light

Swinford Darkness into Light is taking place on May 11th @ 4:15am in the morning. Starting off from the Swinford Community Centre. Parking in Tesco car park and beside the Robert Mc Callion Memorial Pitch and Swinford Golf Club. Please carpool if you can.

THE BIG HELLO/ NATIONAL COMMUNITIES WEEKEND EVENT IN SWINFORD

You are invited to Swinford Cultural Centre on Sunday next May 5th at 5pm to enjoy a special event to celebrate National Communities Weekend/ THE BIG HELLO. The Railway Players Variety Group, working with Michael Davitt CCE, reached out to local community groups in Kiltimagh, Aughamore, Killasser, Callow, Foxford and Charlestown and the result will be a very enjoyable, family friendly, show featuring one act comedies, sketches, music, song and dance. This is a free show, part sponsored by Mayo Co Council, and at the end we hope everyone will stay and have some refreshments and a chat.

Fun Run/Walk

Culmore 5km fun run/ walk on Monday 3rd of June in aid of Culmore NS, Swinford . Registration at 11am, 1.5km race for children starts at 12 noon , 5km race starts at 12.30pm. Prizes first male/female runner/walker, first male/female masters (40+), first child per age category, first person with stroller, first person in costume. A lot of spot prizes on the day .

Swinford & District Gardening Club

Swinford & District Gardening Club Trip

Swinford & District Gardening Club will be taking a day trip to Loughrea on Saturday 4th May. We will visit Woodville House and walled gardens. A guided tour of the garden with the Head Gardener will be included. There will also be a tour of Dartfield Horse Museum and the beautiful Loughrea Cathedral. Breakfast and dinner included. Our destination for this year’s Gardening Trip (24/25/26th June) will be Waterford. We will be staying in the centrally located 4 star Treacy’s Hotel,Spa and Leisure Club. There will be a variety packed itinerary. Some highlights of the tour: a scenic trip from Kilmeaden on the Wexford & Suir Valley steam train, Mount Congreve Gardens, the Viking Triangle including Reginald’s Tower, a tour of Waterford, the Museum of Treasure etc. There will also be an opportunity for shopping and on the way home a visit to a garden centre. Swinford Duathlon

The Swinford Triathlon club is running a Duathlon on May Bank Holiday Sunday, May 5th. It starts from the Amenity Park at 10am. Registration can be done on the day from 8am to 9:30am. This is an ideal event for those who can run and cycle, but might never have tried a duathlon. There is a 5k run, followed by a 21k cycle, and finishes with a 2k run. Contact Marie on 087-280-5222. Swinford Camera Club

Meetings take place in the Gateway hotel at 8pm on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of the month. If you are looking to take up a new hobby, why not try photography? Come along to a meeting and see if you’d like it. As always, new members are always very welcome, especially beginners.

 

Resilience Building Course for Children in Swinford Cultural Centre –

Course Starting on Tuesday 14th May 2019. 10 session programme run over 5 weeks, 2 days per week, with the aim of assisting children build resilience and self-esteem.
Working in small groups, the children will learn important skills and techniques to deal with everyday worries and stresses through fun and interactive activities.
The course will be given by Laura Murtagh, Educational Psychologist and Primary Teacher.
It will take place on;
Tuesdays at 4.30 – 5.30 for 8-10 year-olds and from 5.30 to 6.30 for 11-13 year- olds.
Saturdays at 10am – 11am for 8-10 year-olds and from 11am to 12 midday for 11-13 year-olds.

The cost of the 5-week course is €120 (€20 deposit required to secure a place).

Swinford Go Getters

Swinford Go Getters are a social activities club for over 55’s who meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month. We play a variety of fun games including Boccia, skittles, ball and bean bag games which are part of the Go for Life Games. A new parachute game was added in January where the idea is to balance a ball and other items on the parachute. We also added a horse-racing game and others. All games are designed to be played sitting or standing. Individuals and groups welcome.
Dates for the next few games held at the Cultural Centre Swinford 10.30am to12.30pm.
Thursday 9th May – Bealtaine Festival open day – includes demos of games music and dance session led by an experienced leader
Thursday 13th June
No expertise needed. Refreshments served including homemade cakes.

Musical Theatre Summer Camp/Workshops.

The Railway Players Variety Group in conjunction with Flare Musical Theatre Productions will run a Summer Camp for young people and a series of workshops for older teens and adults from August 12th to 16th. Participants will enjoy fun filled hours of choreography, singing and acting. More details to follow.

Swinford had a long and proud tradition of musical shows/pantomimes and The Railway Players are looking forward to reviving that tradition during this special Swinford 250 year of celebration

2 Yogalates Classes Run Every Monday In The Cultural Centre Swinford.
First at 1pm Lunchtime Yogalates, this is a 45 minute Class. The second is Yogalates By Candlelight at 7pm and runs for 1 Hour. Both Classes are For Beginners so join anytime and Classes are Pay As You Go. We start with Yoga Poses so you can start To Heal and Breathe Then Pilates For Strengthening Your Core, then we move on To Stretching To Renew Your Muscles and Help with Posture and Finish with Relaxation. Please Bring your own Mat, Blanket and Cushion. This is Good For Chronic Conditions, Anxiety, Arthritis, Asthma, High Blood Pressure & Fatigue To name a few. Get Connected’ in 2019 – Computer/Internet classes for older learners

Age Action runs beginner and refresher computer/Internet classes (for people aged 55+ who have little or no computer experience, want to learn how to use their device or who are apprehensive of technology. Continuing in March 2019, classes will be held in Swinford Library on Wednesdays from 10:0 0 – 12:00pm. Each course runs for 5 consecutive weeks (2 hours per week) and there is no fee. Participants are generally taught on an individual basis (1:1) so this is a great opportunity to have your own tutor to help you ‘get connected’ in 2019. Laptops/iPads/iPhones/Tablets/Smartphones all welcome OR if you have no device we can provide one for you. (NOTE: these classes are for beginners or for people who wish to refresh/build on their basic skills. One course per person – If you have already taken a course with Age Action since January 2017 you are not eligible to apply.)

Healthcare Support Training

Mayo North East is organising a free Healthcare Support Training Course in Swinford for unemployed people or people in part-time employment. On successful completion of the course learners will have gained a Healthcare Support QQI Level 5 Major award.  Garda Vetting must be successfully completed. Training will commence one day per week in April  2019 and conclude October 2019. Please contact Dolores McNicholas on  0877704251 or email dmcnicholas@mayonortheast.com to register for the course. This training is funded under The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme.
