Swinford Camera Club hold meetings every 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 8 pm in the National School, Swinford. See Swinford.ie for more details

Swinford Camera Club

The next meeting of Swinford Camera Club is 8pm tonight (Wednesday 6th May) in Swinford National School.

If you have an interest in photography why not come along to one of our meetings, everyone is most welcome, especially beginners. Meetings are held at 8pm in Swinford National School every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month.

If you are thinking of purchasing a new camera, or thinking of buying accessories for your camera why not come along and get some advice from club members. Swinford Camera Club members have a wide variety of cameras, from compact point & shoot up to DSLR’s.

East Mayo Anglers Retirement Function

East Mayo Anglers invite all members, both past and present to mark the recent retirement of their water keeper Martin Howley. Martin has retired after serving East Mayo Anglers for nearly 18 years.

The function will be held in the Gateway Hotel on Friday 8th May at 9pm.

Swinford Gardening Club Trips

A reminder that there will be a gardening club trip to Lorna McMahon’s internationally famous Ardcarraig 5 acre garden at Oranswell, Bushypark, Galway on Sunday 10th May. Divided into 17 sections there are water gardens, a Japanese style garden, a herb garden, a sunken Mediterranean garden and bog and woodland areas. There are also large collections of primulas, hostas, and dwarf conifers. Plants, many of which are rare or unusual, will be on sale.

An evening visit to Sarah Power’s Nursery Tourmakeady, followed by a social evening in Maire Luke’s, will take place on Friday 22nd May.

Swinford GAA Club Meeting

Swinford GAA Club Meeting will be held at 6:30pm on Sunday 10th May in the Gateway Hotel. All club members are asked to attend.

Swinford Choral Festival

The Choral Festival Concert will be held in Our Lady Help of Christians Church Swinford at 8.30pm on Friday 22nd May.

The following choirs have been announced for this year’s concert -:
Mayo Youth Choir, Grace Notes from Ballyhaunis, Oban from Scotland, and the Swinford Church Choir with Ms Francie McNicholas. Antoinette Byrne and Fr James McDonagh will also provide top class entertainment.

Proceeds are in aid of the Church Restoration Fund.

Anyone who would like to help on the night, please contact either Fr Dermot Meehan or Joe Mellett.

Tickets are €12 each with a special rate of €10 for OAPS and €6 for Under 18’s.
Tickets can be bought in Mellett’s Newsagents, Eurospar, Spain’s and Gavaghan’s Mace.

Siamsa Seipeil 2015

Tickets have just gone on sale for this year’s Siamsa Seipeil. As announced in our featured article here, Phil Coulter, one of Ireland’s finest artistes of all time will be playing in Swinford Church on Friday 31st July. Phil will also be joined by special guests on the night which will be announced at a later date.

You can buy tickets online from the Swinford GAA website or directly from O’Connells Pharmacy, the Gateway Hotel & Melletts Newsagents. You can also get your ticket by contacting Mick on 087 6837564.

Best of luck to local musician Peter Gallagher, as he returns to Swinford this weekend to take part in the Mayo Fleadh Cheoil.

Peter, now predominately based in Castlebar, will be playing the guitar in the accompaniment section, which is a recent addition to the Fleadh. He will be competing alongside his good friend, Thomas Langan from Castlebar, who will be playing the 4 styles of tunes on the fiddle.

This competition is due to take place on Sunday 10th May.

Scout Leaders Required

Swinford Mayo 24 Scouts is currently looking to recruit new leaders for September 2015. If you are able to give an hour per week and you are interested in learning new skills along with sharing your own skills and life experiences, then Swinford Scouts are looking to hear from you.

Swinford GAA 50/50 Draw

This week’s 50/50 draw was worth €828 and was won by Kieran McNulty of Cloongullane.

The next Swinford GAA 50/50 Draw will take place in Boland’s Bar on Tuesday 12th May.

Draw envelopes are widely available in Swinford’s shops and businesses at €2 each or 3 for €5. You can also get your tickets online through the Swinford GAA store where tickets can be purchased in bundles of 10, 20, or 52 weeks.

Swinford National School Enrolment 2015

Please ensure that completed enrolment forms for the school year 2015/16 are returned to Swinford National School by 22nd May.

Enrolment forms are available from the school or can be downloaded directly from the Swinford N.S website.

Swinford Men’s Shed

Swinford Men’s Shed will be meeting at 8pm on Thursday 14th May at a venue to be notified. The members will be delighted to receive any idle work tools that you may have lying about. Please contact Swinford Men’s Shed on 086 1666620 if you would like to donate any such items.

The committee is working hard on sourcing a venue for the Men’s Shed to call home and it is hoped progress will be made on this in the coming weeks.

Killasser Community Centre 50/50 Draw

Congratulations to Elaine Quinn of Killasser who won €1040 in the Killasser Community Centre 50/50 Monthly Draw which was held in Frank’s Place on Sunday 3rd May.

The next monthly draw will be held in Frank’s Place on Sunday 31st May.

Humbert Challenge Triathlon

Swinford Tri Sports are again hosting the Humbert Challenge Triathlon and this year’s event will take place on Sunday 28th June.

The Humbert Challenge Triathlon is an Olympic distance triathlon which involves a 1500m swim in the beautiful Callow Lake, a 44k cycle and a 10k run. Last years event not only attracted a great level of local participation but also competitors from all over the country and beyond.

Swinford Tri Sports continues to provide regular training and new members are always welcomed.

Swinford Agricultural Show

The Swinford Agricultural Show 2015 will be held on Saturday 15th August.

The committee sincerely thank the 2014 financial sponsors for their generosity without which the show would not be possible. They also thank the many other supporters who provide them with the venue for the show (Pat Kelly of Swinford Motors, Eddie O’Hara, Kieran Rowley, Michael O’Donnell and Brian McNulty) and the Gateway Hotel.
