Swinford Flood Management Consultation Day

Preliminary Options for managing flood risk in Swinford have been produced by JBA Consulting on behalf of the Office of Public Works. A Public Consultation Day will be held today (Wednesday 24th June) in the Swinford Library and Cultural Centre between 3pm and 8pm.

Members of the community are invited to come along to view the preliminary options and provide any comments they may have.

Siamsa Sraide Table Quiz

A table quiz will be held in Mellett’s Pub at 9pm on Friday 26th June.

This event will raise much needed funds to maintain the 31st Siamsa Sraide Street Festival. The organisers appeal for your support so please come along and bring your friends for a entertaining night out.

Meelick Irish Countrywomen’s Association

The Meelick Guild of the ICA invites you to join them on an outing to Arigna Mines with lunch at Kilronan Castle on Sunday 5th July.

The bus will leave from Meelick Church after 10am Mass. The cost of transport, lunch and entry to Arigna Mines is €50, which is to be paid to either Mary Browne Tel: 086 8600352 or Maud Begley Tel: 087 9810549 by Sunday 28th June.

Swinford GAA 50/50 Draw

This week’s 50/50 draw was worth €880 and was won by Mary Quinn of Deerpark, Swinford.

The next Swinford GAA 50/50 Draw will take place in Quinn’s on Tuesday 30th June.

Draw envelopes are widely available in Swinford’s shops and businesses at €2 each or 3 for €5. You can also get your tickets online through the Swinford GAA store where tickets can be purchased in bundles of 10, 20, or 52 weeks.

Your continued support is greatly appreciated and who knows next week you could be the lucky one……..

Humbert Challenge Triathlon

As highlighted in our featured articleSwinford Tri Sports are once again hosting the Humbert Challenge Triathlon on Sunday 28th June.

The Humbert Challenge Triathlon is an Olympic distance triathlon which involves a 1500m swim in the beautiful Callow Lake, a 44k cycle and a 10k run. Last years event not only attracted a great level of local participation but also competitors from all over the country and beyond.

Swinford.ie would like to wish everyone taking part the very best of luck and we hope that all participants & spectators enjoy a great day at the event.

Culmore Show

Fun Horse and Pony Jumping Show will be held at Culmore Training and Trekking Centre on Sunday 28th June.

€10 entry fee per class.
Entries will be taken on the day, starting with newcomers at 11am.

Work commenced to improve the playing surface on the football pitch on Monday 22nd June. As a result the pitch will be closed for a few weeks.

A date for your diary…. Killasser Family Fun Day will take place from 2pm to 6pm on Sunday 5th July in the Community Centre and Football Pitch.

The Achonry Diocese is organising a three day pilgrimage to Lough Derg from Monday to Wednesday 20th – 22nd July.

Island admission €70 for adults, €65 for seniors, €59.50 for students.

Swinford Indoor Country Market

Come and celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July at the Swinford Indoor County Market from 9:30am – 2pm at the Swinford Cultural Centre. They have a busy day planned for the whole family. ‘In Stitches’ Wool & Craft shop are running a workshop for all children (Boys & Girls) aged 6+.

As always lots of lovely stalls are there with a few new faces among them, fish, woodcrafts, fruit, veg, cakes, breads, preserves, plants and crafts, will all be available. Plus there will be Live Bluegrass music playing.

The Railway Cafe will also be open for everyone to sit down relax with a lovely cup of tea and a slice of cake while enjoying the music.

The organisers look forward to seeing you all there to help celebrate with them.

Siamsa Sraide Workshops

The Siamsa Sraide Committee are running workshops for a week prior to the festival. Classes are in creative / hip hop dance and West African Drumming. Classes will be held in Scoil Muire agus Treasa and are free of charge.

Dance classes are for boys and girls aged 6 – 17 years. Drumming classes are for boys and girls aged 8 -17 years. Classes are limited to 30 pupils.

Pupils will give a street performance on Monday 3rd August.

Scoil Cheoil Siamsa Sraide

The Michael Davitt CCE are running traditional music classes in Scoil Muire agus Treasa for one week prior to Siamsa Sraide starting on Monday 27th July.

Classes are for beginners and improvers on tin whistle, banjo & bodhran.

BBC Star To Perform At Siamsa Sraide

Joe Keegan from the BBC TV series The Voice will be making an appearance at this year’s Siamsa Sraide Festival on Tuesday 4th August.

The Irish singer, musician and dancer from Manchester will be performing at 2:30pm – 3pm on the main stage as part of the Mayo Manchester Tradfest. Joe will be appearing with Irish Pipers from the Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band.

The Mayo Manchester Tradfest is a six day festival based in and around Ballina featuring over 500 performers from Mayo and Manchester performing at eight official events and forty two fringe events. It is being supported by Failte Ireland, Mayo.ie, The Western People, The Catholic Universe, Ballina Chamber, the Mayo Manchester Tourism and Business Group and the Siamsa Sraide Festival.

Swinford & District Gardening Club Trips

Swinford Gardening Club outings are always enjoyable and an ideal way to visit new and exciting places. On Sunday 19th July, they will be visiting Strokestown Park House Famine Museum and Garden and their three day tour of Wicklow and Kildare will be leaving Swinford on Monday 10th August.

The Osprey Hotel, Naas will be the base for the tour with visits to Belvedere House & Gardens, Newbridge Silver Museum, Newbridge Shopping Centre, Glendalough, Russborough House & Gardens, Blessington Lakes, Fern Hill Garden Centre and a guided tour of Curragh Military Barracks & Museum.

Cost of tour: €240 pp sharing, single supplement €60.
Non-members welcome.

Swinford Mayo 24 Scouts is currently looking to recruit new leaders for September 2015. If you are able to give an hour per week and you are interested in learning new skills along with sharing your own skills and life experiences, then Swinford Scouts are looking to hear from you.
