5k Fun Run / Walk

As part of Swinford Athletics Club Spring Series a 5k Fun Run / Walk will take place in Midfield tonight (Wednesday 22nd April).

Registration is from 6:30pm at Julian’s Midfield. Entry Fee for members is €2 and non-members fee is €5. Walkers will start at 6:45pm and Runners at 7pm.

The event is sponsored by O’Connell’s Pharmacy, Swinford and is in aid of the Console Centre in Midfield.

Mayo Fleadh Cheoil Launch Night

The official launch of Mayo County Fleadh Cheoil 2015 will take place at 8:30pm tonight (Wednesday 22nd April) in the Swinford Cultural Centre. The launch will be performed by Mr Damien Ryan, Cathaoirleach of Mayo Co Council.

All are welcome to attend this event and the organisers would be delighted to see you there enjoying the music, chat and refreshments.

The Fleadh Cheoil is in Swinford again for the 3rd consecutive year and will be held on the weekend of May 8th to 10th. The local Comhaltas Branch, Michael Davitt CCE, are looking forward to bringing crowds of visitors to Swinford and people can be assured of a feast of traditional music, song & dance lasting from Thursday night right through to Sunday night.

Seisiún na nÓg

The monthly Seisiún na nÓg – a session for young musicians – with Rob Thornburgh will be held in Quinn’s of Lower Main Street this Sunday 26th April at 6pm. This lovely session usually lasts about an hour and a half and is most enjoyable. All young musicians are welcome to attend.

Special Olympics Collection Day

The Special Olympics Collection Day 2015 will take place on Friday 24th April.

Volunteers will hit the streets of Swinford to help raise vital funds for Special Olympics Ireland. All of the money raised on Collection Day goes towards supporting the grass roots Special Olympics programme.

Alzheimer’s Tea Morning

Swinford Active Retirement Group will be hosting a Tea Morning in aid of local Alzheimer’s services in the Gateway Hotel from 10.30am on Friday 24th April.

Please come along for a cuppa and a chat and support this important cause.

Swinford Gardening Club Meeting

The next meeting of Swinford & District Gardening Club will take place in Horkan’s Garden Centre at 7:30pm on Tuesday 28th April. Anyone requiring a lift should be at the Gateway Hotel by 7pm at the latest.

The Gardening Club have some exciting new trips planned for the summer months and non members are very welcome to come along too.

Swinford Community Indoor Market

Saturday 2nd May sees the return of the Swinford Indoor Market. It’s location as always, is in the lovely historic Cultural Centre on Station Road (beside the library) and the market will be open from 9:30am to 2:00pm.

They have a new Facebook page ‘Swinford Indoor County Market’ and their first competition is for two free lunches at “The Railway Cafe” if you like and share. More competitions will be coming up every month so start following!

The regular traders will be available with the addition of a wicker and willow stall, and a fresh fish stall. So come along support your local market, have a chat, a browse and enjoy a tea or coffee.

Arrive early to avoid disappointment!

Swinford Men’s Shed

Swinford Men’s Shed will be meeting at 8pm on Thursday 14th May at a venue to be notified. The members will be delighted to receive any idle work tools that you may have lying about. Please contact Swinford Men’s Shed on 086 1666620 if you would like to donate any such items.

The committee is working hard on sourcing a venue for the Men’s Shed to call home and it is hoped progress will be made on this in the coming weeks.

The committee and members would like to thank John Fallon of Claremorris Men’s Shed who gave a talk at the meeting on Thursday 16th April and enlightened us all with his experience.

Swinford GAA 50/50 Draw

This week’s draw was worth €806 and was won by Lorraine Gallagher c/o Swinford Motors.

The next draw will take place in The Sheepwalk Bar on Tuesday 28th April.

Draw envelopes are widely available in Swinford’s shops and businesses at €2 each or 3 for €5. You can also get your tickets online through the Swinford GAA store where tickets can be purchased in bundles of 10, 20, or 52 weeks.

Swinford Men’s Shed Cheque Presentation

Deirdre Sarsfield of Women’s Support Service Castlebar is pictured above receiving a cheque for €500. This was the proceeds from the voluntary contributions collected at the Christmas Crib in Swinford, over the Christmas period. The crib was the first project built by Swinford Men’s Shed.

Presenting the cheque to Deirdre Sarsfield are, Paddy Brennan Chairman Swinford Men’s Shed, Joe Finn Secretary Swinford Men’s Shed, Tommy Dunne Men’s Shed Member and Cathal Kelly Secretary Swinford Tidy Towns.

On behalf of Women’s Support Services, Deirdre would like to thank everyone who contributed to this very worthy cause and helped raise the issue of domestic violence in our community.

Swinford Community Games

Swinford Community Games will take place in the Amenity Park on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May starting at 2pm. All children under 16 years and living in the Swinford area are encouraged to come along and take part.

The Mayo Athletics finals will be held on Sunday 21st June in Claremorris.
