The Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC U13s have won the County A Final after a titanic battle with Westport in Ballyheane on Saturday last. This cold and wet November afternoon was illuminated by two great footballing teams who played out a County Final that kept all in attendance captivated by its excitement right up to the final whistle. The difference between these two closely matched teams from the tenth minute until the end was a spectacular goal worthy to grace any final. And, when that final whistle sounded, Swinford Killasser deservedly emerged victorious on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-08; to be crowned Mayo Ladies Gaelic Football U13 A County Champions for 2014.

With both teams having romped through their qualifying rounds, this was always going to be a close final where the winner would be impossible to predict. The damp slippery conditions could have played havoc with lesser footballers, but on this day these two young teams ignored the conditions as both gave their all to win a county title. Swinford Killasser controlled the early exchanges and threatened to overrun Westport in the first ten minutes. Ciara Henry, Ronya Benson and the impressive Aoife O’Neill pressed the Westport defence, but with the goal area crowded scores were hard to come by.

Niamh McCann

Niamh McCann did open the scoring with a point from the left on five minutes. Still not having broken out of their own half, Westport appeared to be holding the eventual champions at bay. That was until Ella Grace drifted in from the right wing in the tenth minute to get the ball around thirty metres from goal. She unleashed a thundering shot which went off the underside of the bar and into the top left corner of the net. Westport responded with a point, but Swinford Killasser added on five more from Grainne O’Neill (3) and Aoife O’Neill (2) to build up a sizeable lead. Before the break this lead was whittled down to just a goal, as Westport enjoyed their best spell of the game; sending the teams into half time with the score 1-06 to 0-06.

Both sets of defenders played outstanding in the second half and this kept the scoring to just two points each for the half. Niamh McCann put Swinford Killasser four ahead; Westport brought it back to three. Aoife O’Neill stretched it to four again before Westport again closed to three points. Westport pushed hard for the goal they needed to tie the game, but were unable to break down a resolute Swinford Killasser defence.

Briana Fallon and Orla Mullaney tackled like tigers on the wings. Chloe Moore and Aoibhinn Flattley made countless interceptions. Meghan Philbin made two vital goal line blocks. Kelly Walsh and Aoife O’Neill dropped deep into the back line to assist. The talented Maeve Gallagher and Grainne O’Neill, displayed astuteness that belied their young age as they carried the ball up field to give their defence much needed respite.

Eimear ONeill

Breege Gleeson, Emer O’Neill & Ailbhe O’Brien added fresh legs to the forwards when introduced. This was a great team effort; a team effort that was surely taking inspiration from the outstanding Siobhan Hennigan and Alanagh Durkin, who were colossal in the heart of the back line. As a team these girls repelled everything Westport could throw at them, and in doing so, secured a 1-08 to 0-08 win for Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC.

Swinford Killasser Captain, Alanagh Durkin received the County U13 A Championship Cup on behalf of her jubilant team mates, from Mayo LGFA Treasurer, Jimmy Murphy. Both praised the great game of football played by two excellent teams. And of how, on the day, Swinford Killasser U13s were the deserving winners. They displayed all the traits of a well-balanced County Champions team; flair in attack, guile in midfield, strength in defence and above all they worked hard for each other as a team. When the presentation was over they also celebrated wildly together as a team of Champions.

Swinford Killasser Minor team have to do it all again after Sundays County Semi Final draw with Carnacon. Although Swinford Killasser led for long periods of this game, their visitors always looked threatening and but for some great defending our local team could have being in serious trouble going into the last few minutes. Having gone one point down late on, the girls showed great fight as they dug deep to level the match with only a couple of minutes remaining.

The final score was 3-06 to 1-12. As the referee deemed the light to be too poor for extra time to take place safely, the game will be replayed in Carnacon on Sunday at 1 pm. We wish the Swinford Killasser LGFC Minor girls the best of luck as they hope to finish the job off on Sunday to reach another County Final.
