Michael Walsh Intermediate League

Swinford 0-8 Balla 0-6

Swinford managed to fend off a late Balla resurgence on Sunday as they advanced to the Michael Walsh semi-final where they will play Moy Davitts in Parke on Saturday.
It was the visitors to Robert McCallion Memorial Park who started the brighter and opened the scoring with a couple of points before Gerry Callaghan got his side up and running with a fine score from a tight angle. From that point on, there was very little Balla resistance in terms of scoring until late in the game as they wasted numerous opportunities in front of goal whilst Swinford took their chances much better.
Danny McNicholas hit a long range score which was followed by scores from midfielder Mark Forkan, a John Carney free and James Sweeney to push Swinford into a 0-5 to 0-2 lead. Manager Pat O’Neil decided to change things up minutes later bringing on four substitutes – Ryan Convey, Kevin McDonagh, Joe Kelly and Mick Prendergast – 10 minutes before half time.
The subs had an immediate impact with Kevin McDonagh tapping over a point moments after a move between himself and Mick Prendergast almost reaped a score.
At half time Swinford were four points ahead and seemingly in control of the game as they gradually began to assert themselves in the middle of the park. Kevin McDonagh hit over another free before Mick Prendergast hit a long range effort 10 minutes into the half. That would be Swinford’s last score however as Balla began to get on top in the possession stakes. However they couldn’t close the gap completely with three points from frees and another from play their only return from the second half as the defensive effort led by Steven McNicholas, sweeper John Carney and Alan McLoughlin stopped many of their attacks in their tracks.

Swinford: Sean Kavanagh, Kevin Barry, Steven McNicholas, Alan McLoughlin, Darren Campbell, Sean Brady, James Lavin, Mark Forkan, Barry Brennan, John Carney, Danny McNicholas, Liam Moran, James Sweeney, Gerry Callaghan, James Devanney.
Scorers: Kevin McDonagh 0-2, Mark Forkan, Danny McNicholas, Mark Forkan, Mick Prendergast, Gerry Callaghan and James Sweeney 0-1 each.

Thanks to Kevin Moran for the report.
