Hayley Crowned Senior Player of the Year
Hayley Crowned Swinford Killasser Player of the Year
Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC has just enjoyed what will definitely go down as one of the Clubs greatest Presentation Dinner Dances. The success of the whole event was probably inevitable as the huge gathering of players, family and friends came together to celebrate all that the Club have won in the last year. The theme for the night was “2014 A Year of 5 County Titles”. And these glamorously dressed young men and women were there to celebrate these achievements in style. The function room was bedecked in the Clubs black and red, with an impressive backdrop displaying all the action shots from the year. The mood for the evening was set as the sell-out crowd gave a tumultuous welcome to the five County Title winning captains, who kicked off the celebrations with a parade of all the silverware won by Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC. A feast fit for such an occasion was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and memories of every game played were relived to the sounds of the year’s music. The presentation of seven teams with their County medals was greeted with continuous applause, as Mid-West Radio Sports presenter Angelina Nugent kept the audience entertained throughout. And, when all the formalities were concluded, the party kicked off as young and old took to the dance floor to celebrate. To a musical selection ranging from the current hits right back to the 80s, everyone joined in the revelries. This Club is well known for its magnificent fetes on the field; and if there is one thing the Club does equally as well, it has to be its ability to enjoy a celebration party.
With all the County Champions presented with their medals, the much sought after All Star Team Awards were revealed. With its usual mix from right across the age groups to make up the best fifteen players in the Club, the 2014 Swinford Killasser All Star Team is Amy McNicholas, Alanagh Durkin, Maeve Peyton, Briana Fallon, Vanessa McHugh, Michaela Walsh, Anna Tierney, Hayley Moore, Kelly Walsh, Maria Groarke, Orna O’Brien, Aoife O’Neill, Rebecca Lenehan, Melissa Devaney & Roisin Durkin.
The first individual award of the night went to Rebecca McHugh, who received the Most Improved Player of the Year Award. Rebecca worked her way from the bench onto her team at the start of the year. She continually improved to become a vital part of her own double winning U16 team, and the Clubs Minor & Intermediate winning teams. Her award was greeted with unanimous applause in recognition of her steely determination and work rate for her Club; both on and off the field.
In the twelfth consecutive year of Club Awards, this year was the first year in which we had a tied vote for an award. The 2014 Swinford Killasser Young Player of the Year was presented jointly to the Clubs dynamic full forward line partnership of Roisin Durkin and Melissa Devaney. Melissa and Roisin formed a lethal strike force together throughout the year, and appropriately they were now recognised together as the two best young players in the Club. Roisin was captain of her Double winning U16 team, getting many vital scores as she led by example. Melissa made huge impacts upon her introductions in both the semi-final and final of the Intermediate Championship.
The most anticipated award each year is that won by the Senior Player of the Year. In recognition of one of our finest players and to keep her memory with us forever, the Tara Ryan Perpetual Cup is presented annually to the player chosen by the Clubs players, as the Senior Player of the Year. The best Swinford Killasser player in a year of unprecedented success for the Club was Hayley Moore. Hayley, who is a daughter of Anne and Gerry attends DCU, and is a past pupil of Scoil Muire & Padraig and Barnacogue National School. She has enjoyed a very successful gymnastics career and this year represented our Club on the Mayo Minor team who reached the Connacht Final. And with her Club, Hayley was outstanding at midfield for both the Minor & Senior County Title winning teams. These exceptional performances in this exceptional year were duly recognised by her team mates, who chose Hayley Moore as the 2014 Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC Senior Player of the Year.
Our Club extends a huge Thank You to everyone who made the event such a roaring success; especially our players, their friends and their families. Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC is extremely proud of all the young girls and lads for the way they celebrated our fantastic year. We also want to thank Tony Lynskey Bus Hire, The Green Room, Cards & Gifts, Brendan & Angelina Nugent, Gorman Entertainment, Hotel Ballina and Swinford Photography for the excellent professional services they provided. An album of all the professional photographs taken on the evening is available to preview on swinfordphotograpy.ie. Prints can be ordered online for a very reasonable price.
Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC Players Registration Evening
Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC will hold Players Registration on Friday February 27th from 6pm to 8pm at Swinford Amenity Park. Trainers and officers will be available on the evening to assist with any queries you may have.
The Registration form will be available through schools, by Club email or can be got at the registration evening. We extend an open invitation to anybody who wishes to join our Club; whether you are currently playing, have never played before, wish to take up playing again after a break, or would like to help out in non-playing Club activities. While Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC has a strong history of winning County titles on a regular basis, the enjoyment of sport and the associated social activities is a priority for our Club.
Our Club has just enjoyed a phenomenally successful year in which our players broke all records by winning five County Titles, and the Aoife Regan U10 Tournament. We currently have almost two hundred players from Swinford & Killasser competing at the highest club level in the most competitive ladies team sport in Mayo; which is one of the leading Ladies Gaelic Footballing counties in Ireland. Our players are coached and developed from a young age in all the skills of the game, the art of team work and above all, the respectful enjoyment of sport. Our Club was represented by no fewer than ten players on Mayo teams in 2014; with many more on Mayo Development panels.
Along with training and playing, we actively encourage players to get involved in off field activities; thus giving the players a sense of ownership and responsibility within their Club and their Community. We organise non footballing occasions for our players; such as the underage visit to the circus and Croke Park. The annual Club Presentation Dinner Dance has now become one of the main social events for our community each year.
And, every five years Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC organises a Club tour to New York. The next tour is scheduled for just two years from now, in 2017. An organising committee is currently being set up. All players from U14 to Minor in 2015 will be eligible for selection. Inclusion or exclusion on the New York Tour panel will be subject to a player’s commitment during 2015 & 2016.
