Aras Attracta Afternoon Tea Party

An afternoon tea party will be held this afternoon (Wednesday 3rd December) at 4pm in the Gateway Hotel in aid of the ‘Family and Friends of Aras Attracta’. The Coleman School of Irish Dance will give a short exhibition at 4:30pm. So please come along and enjoy some tea/coffee and a treat for €5.

Killasser Community Centre AGM

The Annual General Meeting of Killasser Community Centre will be held tonight (Wednesday 3rd December) at 8pm in the Community Centre.

All interested parties are asked to attend.

The Swinford Christmas Festival is ongoing this week with many events and activities for all the family to enjoy. Wednesday is Senior Citizens Day, featuring special offers all day for senior citizens in all participating businesses.

Over 30 businesses throughout Swinford are giving great promotions and offers throughout the Swinford Christmas Festival.

There is a number of fantastic promotions and special offers in all participating businesses with over €1600 to be won in Swinford shopping vouchers throughout the week and €1000 in cash. Receive entry into the daily draws for €200 in local shopping vouchers when you spend €10 in any of the participating businesses.

Swinford Residential Estates Meeting

A meeting will be held in the Gateway Hotel on Thursday 4th December at 8:30pm for all the residents of the estate developments in Swinford, Meelick, Killasser and Midfield.

This meeting is to facilitate residents committees with a view to formulating a works programme for the next four years. There are those estates that are in charge by Mayo County Council but there are still some estates which are not in charge by the local authority. Mayo County Council intends recommencing its programme of taking estates into charge in 2015. In particular the issue of public lighting and general estate maintenance will need to be addressed.

Swinford Community Indoor Market

The monthly indoor market is proving to be a great success in Swinford. The next market will take place on Saturday 6th December from 9:30am to 1pm in the Cultural Centre. It’s an idea place to get an early start on buying those extra special Christmas gifts locally. Fresh veg, baking, breads, cheese, all kinds of crafts, jewellery and many many more locally produced items will be on offer. The railway café will also be open for tea, coffee, cakes and scones.

In the run up to the festive season, an indoor Christmas market will be held on Sunday 14th December from 10am to 3pm.

Please come along and support your local community market.

Swinford’s Biggest Loser Finale

The finale of Swinford’s Biggest Loser weight loss competition between the White House Pub and the Gateway Hotel will take place on Sunday 7th December in The White House at 9pm.

Since the first weigh in on the 31st of August, both teams have been battling the bulge and losing pounds in the aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital and Console.

The finale promises to be a great night with music provided by Padraic McNeela and plenty of great prizes on offer too. So come along and show your support for the two teams.

Opening of New Outdoor Christmas Crib

This year will see a new large outdoor crib located at Glebe House on Main Street, Swinford. The Crib will be officially blessed and opened on Saturday 6th December at 4:30pm as part of the Christmas Lights switching on ceremony.

Many individuals and groups are involved in this unique crib and the Swinford Christmas Festival would like to thank them all. Ms. Rooney, John and Anne Taylor, Therese Hennigan, Swinford’s Men’s Shed, Haran Scaffolding, Kevin Murtagh and Swinford Tidy Towns.

You will be able to visit this fantastic feature throughout the festive season.

Swinford Christmas Lantern Display

A special Christmas lantern display will take place prior to the switching on of the Christmas lights on Main Street this Saturday 6th December. This promises to be a great family occasion and will take place at approximately 4:30pm

Christmas Lights Switching On Ceremony

This will take place after the opening of the new outdoor Christmas crib at Glebe House on Main Street, Swinford on Saturday 6th December at 5pm. This will be great occasion for all the family to enjoy and the Swinford choir will be singing Christmas carols to provide an extra special atmosphere on the day.

Console Christmas Celebration Of Light

As mentioned in our previous article here, this year’s Console Christmas Celebration Of Light will take place in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Swinford on Sunday 7th December at 4pm.

The theme of this year’s ceremony is ‘Love’.

This special service will be an afternoon of song, music and readings. Families and friends of people lost through suicide are encouraged to bring along a picture of their loved one to place on the altar during the service.

There will be a candlelit atmosphere, with each person partaking in the candle ceremony. Stars with individual messages written on them will be placed on the tree before the lighting ceremony. All are welcomed to attend.

Santa’s Grotto

Santa Claus is coming to town! Swinford Foroige Club will be hosting Santa and his elves in a special grotto located in Egan’s old shop on Main Street, Swinford between 2pm and 5pm on Saturday 6th December. Everyone is invited to come along and meet the great man himself.

The Swinford Christmas Festival would like to thank Eoghan O’Connell for giving the use of his premises for this event.

Christmas Crib Blessing

The Christmas crib which is provided annually by Swinford Drama and Variety Group will be blessed by Fr. Davey on Tuesday 9th December at 7pm. The crib will be situated at the junction of the Ballina/Aclare Road beside Gavaghan’s Mace. Everybody is invited to attend this blessing and enjoy some festive carols.

Barnacogue National School Christmas Disco

Following on from their very successful Halloween Disco, Barnacogue National School are hosting a Children’s Christmas Disco on Friday 12th December from 6:30pm – 8:00pm in the school hall. Santa will be a special guest on the night and everyone is welcome.

Scoil Muire agus Padraig 80’s Musical

Scoil Muire agus Padraig will be presenting their musical ‘Back to the 80s’ at 8pm each night on Thursday 4th, Friday 5th, and Saturday 6th December. Everybody is welcome to attend for what promises to be a very entertaining show.

Senior Citizens Christmas Party

Senior Citizens Christmas Party will take place in Julian’s on Sunday 14th December commencing with Mass at 3pm, followed by dinner and entertainment. A pleasant evening is assured and new faces are always welcome.

Coolegrane Christmas Lights

The Hughes family of Coolegrane, Foxford will once again be erecting their colourful display of Christmas lighting at their home. The Coolegrane Lights have become one of the largest and most colourful displays of Christmas lights in the west of Ireland. As usual a donation box will be placed at their gateway and Kevin Hughes has decided that all proceeds raised this year will be donated to the Roisin Tansey Trust Fund.

The lights will be switched on at 7pm Friday 12th December by Tommy Marren of Midwest Radio. Please come along to view the amazing lights and support this very worthy cause. For further information contact Kevin Hughes on 086 8583380

Mother & Toddler Group

Barneys Busy Bees Mother and Toddler group takes place every Monday and Thursdays from 9:30am to 12noon in Barnacogue National School. Give your infant or toddler an opportunity to socialise and play in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

On Thursday 11th December they will be hosting a special Christmas event. Carmel Balfe will work with the children to create a Christmas Carol Puppet Show. This is a fun, festive and exciting workshop, which will ignite the children’s imagination and creativity. This event is free of charge and open to the public. Everyone welcome!
