Swinford Notes 30th March 2016
Swinford prepares to commemorate 1916
A meeting of community groups was held recently to discuss Swinford’s Commemoration of The 1916 Rising on Saturday April 23rd.
Members of the Michael Davitt Branch of Comhaltas have plans in place for an evening of song, dance & poetry at 8pm in the Cultural Centre on the night. Arising from the Comhaltas planned event the possibility of scheduling additional commemorative events over the weekend were discussed.
In this regard, members of community groups or individuals who would be interested in adding and organising an event to the calendar of the weekend of April 23rd are asked to contact one of the following co-ordinators – Mairin Noone 087 7454032, John Sheehan 087 9100572, Basil McDonnell 087 6460964 or email cceswinford@gmail.com
A follow up meeting will be held on Monday 4th April in Swinford National School at 8.30pm all interested groups and individuals are invited to attend.
Businesses and residents of Swinford are encouraged to fly the National Flag over the Commemorative weekend.
Easter Monday fell on April 24th 1916- the day on which the Easter Rising began and lasted for six days. With that in mind the organisers decided that the weekend of Saturday April 23rd, Sunday 24th is an appropriate time to stage the commemoration.
