Swinford Killasser U14s Reach Division 1 League County Final

Swinford Killasser Ladies Gaelic Football Club

Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC U14 team travelled to Stephenite Park in Ballina on Monday to face the much fancied home side from Kilmoremoy in the Division 1 League Semi Final. Kilmoremoy, having defeated their visitors narrowly in Swinford during the league stages, finishing top of the division with a 100% record and having the two midfielders who led Mayo to the All-Ireland A Final at their disposal deservedly carried the favourites tag going into this Semi Final. But, the Swinford Killasser girls showed little regard for the form guide and with a staggering performance ran out eight point winners to reach the 2014 Division 1 League Final.

Played in perfect conditions in front of a sizeable crowd both teams played some excellent free flowing football, but it was the Swinford Killasser girls who seized the initiative from early on with some great scores. They built on these throughout the first half and went in with a sizeable half time lead. As expected, Kilmoremoy rallied after the break, but they struggled to break down the visitors defence and with the Swinford Killasser forwards continuing to tag on scores at the other end they never really looked likely to catch the eventual winners; who went on to victory on scoreline of 8-07 to 5-08. The 2014 Division One Final against Knockmore will be played on Monday the 30th of June at 7pm in Knockmore; hopefully a good omen as the Club bids to capture its first U14 A title since 2006 when Susan Lavin captained the Club to victory at the north Mayo venue.

Swinford Killasser Girls Take on New York.

Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC will host the New York U14 girls’ team in an Invitational Challenge match at Swinford Amenity Park on Wednesday the 25th of June at 6pm. Having just enjoyed successful campaigns in Division 1 and Division 3 of the Mayo County League and as they prepare for the Division 1 County Final, the girls are looking forward to plying their footballing skills against their visitors from the USA.

New York Ladies Team

The New York team will be in Ireland to participate in the National Feile competition which is being played throughout Connacht on the last weekend in June. The party of seventy five, between players, mentors and parents will travel to Swinford from their base in Athlone to take on our local Under 14 team on the Wednesday evening. The players who make up this New York team come from clubs in various towns around New York. Many of the players live in traditional Irish areas such as Yonkers and Rockland County but the team also includes girls from Long Island, New Haven and The Bronx.

Ladies Gaelic Football is one of the fastest growing sports in this region and the quality of underage teams from New York will astound many who come to see them. They have participated in Feile since 2006, were champions in 2012 and are very committed to their sport as can be witnessed by their travelling long distances to train for this year’s tour since they began in sub-zero temperatures back in February. The New York team include Tara Lyons, daughter of Joe and granddaughter of well-known local football enthusiasts Marty and Margaret Lyons from Meelick among their ranks. Other players with connections to this area include Mairead Durkin, daughter of Shane from Aclare and Mary Kate Henry, whose father Declan comes from Curry. As happened when our Club visited New York, we expect many transatlantic friendships to be struck up between players from opposing sides on the evening, which will continue through social media in the future. The Swinford Killasser club encourages a large crowd to turn out to welcome our New York visitors and to cheer on both teams in this extraordinary event in our footballing calendar.
