County Minor A Champions

Mitchels have no Answer for Swinford Killasser Class

A display of the finest quality attacking football led Swinford Killasser Ladies GFC to become County Minor A Champions in Claremorris on Saturday last. The pace, directness and accuracy of the East Mayo girls from start to finish swept their much fancied opponents aside. Winning County Titles is always good, but winning titles playing this Champaign football must, and will, go down as one of the best ever victories for the much decorated Swinford Killasser Ladies Gaelic Football Club.

In most pundits eyes, Swinford Killasser went into this final as rank outsiders; facing a team with no fewer than six of Mayos Connacht Final Minor team. This game looked like a good learning experience for a young team; who could possibly develop into contenders in years to come. But no one told the Swinford Killasser girls of the way the script was supposed to go. They tore into their opponents from the outset; scoring 1-03 before Castlebar managed to mount a single attack. The favourites were stunned. The underdogs had got the start they needed. And although possession for the remainder of the first half was fairly evenly shared, the Swinford Killasser backs limited their opponents to long range shots from over optimistic positions. And just like a confident boxer, Swinford Killasser were able to draw their opponents in and hit them with two or three knockout scores at the other end.

As half time neared, the West Mayo girls were on the ropes, struggling to hold out against the faster Swinford Killasser girls. But they still had a glimmer of hope thanks to a well taken penalty late in the half. The break can often change a game and the first score of the second half can be vital. Rather than packing the defence to hold onto their lead, Swinford Killasser introduced even more pace, and pushed further up the field. The result was immediate with another two goals added within minutes to put the final result beyond doubt. The Champions went on to totally dominate the remainder of the game and won on a scoreline of 7-12 to 1-03.

Amy McNicholas received the cup on behalf of her team and Orna O’Brien again picked up a player of the match award. These girls deservedly received the silverware, but this game was won through great team play rather than any individual performances. Every player on the Champions team excelled in this final; with a display of sheer class from keeper to final substitute. Perfection is rarely achieved during big games, but this panel of Swinford Killasser players have just saved the perfect performance for the biggest game of the year; to become 2015 Mayo Ladies County Minor A Champions.

As Mayo Champions, Swinford Killasser will now go on to play the Galway Champions in the Connacht Minor Club Championship. In the meantime, the girls have a home game with Westport in Division 1 of the League on Sunday at 1.15.
