On 29th of August Midfield National School celebrated the 50th anniversary of the opening of the school. It was a momentous occasion attended by a large number of people from the community including present and past pupils.

The day began with Mass at 2pm celebrated by Bishop Brendan Kelly and concelebrated by Fr Gerry Davey, Fr Dermot Meehan and Canon Michael Joyce. Midfield Pipe band added to the occasion with an array of tunes both before and after mass.

The celebrations continued back at the school with refreshments and entertainment. A commemorative tree was planted by Bishop Kelly to mark the occasion. A beautiful marble bench by PJ Byrne and son Swinford and kindly donated by the family of the late Tara Ryan was unveiled. The inscription reminds us to keep all past pupils and teachers close to our hearts.

Members of the community and past pupils took a trip down memory lane –reminiscing over old photos and looking over the roll books.

The children were entertained with bouncy castles, face painting and the arrival of the ice-cream van. That evening a large crowd attended a function in Julians enjoying fine food, company and entertainment. The organising committee would like to thank all who helped and contributed to a very successful event.

We would like to thank the following: Bishop Kelly and the clergy, Midfield choir, Midfield Pipe band, the pupils of Midfield N.S, those who baked and brought food to the school, May and John Julian, Sean and Margaret Julian, Joan Gallagher for the flowers in the church and school, Marie Henry for the wonderful cake.
