October Bank Holiday entertainment in Swinford

The 4th annual Féile na Samhna will take place in Swinford during the October bank holiday weekend (October 24th to 27th)

This year’s theme is The Rambling House

Enjoy some traditional music on Friday night

Friday 24th October :

Traditional Sessions will take place during the night in pubs around the town.

Saturday 25th October :

11.00am to 1.00pm :

Singing workshop for children and young people up to 14 years in Teach Uí Chonaill – opposite AIB on Main Street. The tutor for this workshop is Síle Uí Mhongáin. A primary teacher from north Mayo. Síle is a renowned Sean nós singer and indeed adjudicates at the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil. We are delighted to have her in Swinford and we are sure that the children will enjoy learning some new songs from her. The workshop is free of charge but please email: cceswinford@gmail.com or call 087 7454032 to reserve a place.

Seamus MacMathuna

2.00pm :

Official Opening and Fáilte in the Gateway Hotel followed by a talk and presentation on The Rambling House by Joe McGowan, the well known historian and storyteller from Co Sligo. He will be ably supported by many others, including special guests Seamus MacMathuna, Vince Hearns and Alan Morrisroe. There will be a musical session afterwards and refreshments will be available to all who attend.

4.30pm :

Singing workshop for adults and young people over 14 with Clare’s famous Sean Nos singer – Seamus MacMathuna in Teach Uí Chonaill – opposite AIB on Main Street. Séamus is known all over Ireland, and indeed internationally as a singer and musician. He intends to get his audience singing lively Irish and English Sean nós songs – “amhráin rithimiúla” to quote his own words. This workshop is also free of charge but once again please email: cceswinford@gmail.com or call 087 7454032 to reserve a place.

9.00pm :

Oíche Amhránaíocht. Enjoy a night of singing, storytelling, recitation and caint in the Meeting Room at Campbell’s Lounge, Main Street.

Sunday 26th October :

Midfield Pipe Band will be playing at Feile na Samhna 2014 in Swinford. Visit Swinford.ie for more details

Midfield Pipe Band on the streets of Swinford

The Midfield Pipe Band will give a recital at the church after last Mass and then march down the town and finish with a recital on Main Street.

5.00pm :

The main event of this year’s Féile na Samhna is the re-enactment of  “The Rambling House” in the Gateway Hotel. Singers, dancers, musicians and storytellers from all over Mayo and further afield will entertain visitors and locals alike. Everybody who comes to visit will be treated to a traditional Irish welcome and wonderful traditional fare, e.g. homemade bread, boxty and jelly and custard will be served. It was marvellous evening at the house dance last year and it’s expected that the Rambling House to be as just good and maybe even better. Drop in for a visit anytime during the evening and feel free to let us know if you would like to sing, dance or play music. Admission is free.

Michael Comer’s Historical Walk of Swinford

11.00am :

Finish the weekend with an enjoyable historical stroll around Swinford with Michael Comer followed by a cuppa in the Gateway.
