Xmas Fest 1

 

Christmas Festival Launched

A very successful launch took place in the Gateway Hotel last week for the Swinford Christmas Festival 2015. The Festival will run from Friday November 27th to Sunday December 6th.

Diary Of Events

Friday 27th November

On Friday November 27th Swinford Christmas Shopping Promotion commences. At 6pm the daily draw for local shopping vouchers will be held (different venue each day). Thousands in local shopping vouchers to be won throughout the festival.

Free entry to draws with every €10 spent in participating businesses throughout the festival.

At 9.30pm an inter pub fun quiz will run in all participating pubs.

Saturday 28th November

At 6 o’clock the daily draw for local shopping vouchers will be followed by the Declan O’Rourke intimate and live concert at 8pm in the Cultural Centre (doors open at 7.30pm).

Sunday 29th November

Sunday is action packed with the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice bazaar in the Cultural Centre.

5 o’clock the annual Console Celebration of Light will take place in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Swinford.

The Frosties Winter Woodland Treasure Hunt will kick-off in Swinford Woods at 4 o’clock.

Award Winning Poet To Perform in Home Town of Swinford.

Hearts and Minds: An Evening with Martin Dyar and Donal Ryan

The multi-award-winning Irish writers Martin Dyar and Donal Ryan will read at a very special event at the Gateway Hotel in Swinford on November 29th at 8pm.

The Booker-nominated novelist Donal Ryan, author of the international bestseller The Spinning Heart, and the Patrick Kavanagh Award winning poet Martin Dyar, whose collection Maiden Names was a book of the year in both the Guardian and the Irish Times, will read from both their own work and excerpts from each other’s work in a special call and response format. The two writers will also offer reflections on their writing process and the centrality of rural Ireland to their work. The event will be followed by a book signing, a perfect opportunity to get signed books for Christmas presents.

 

Donal Ryan

Swinford Native Donncha O’Connell, professor of Law at NUI, Galway, will introduce the two writers. The reading is curated by the literary publisher Arlen House, currently celebrating its 40th birthday. Please contact the Gateway Hotel, Swinford, on 0949252156 to book tickets at €10 each. Monday 30th November

The daily draw for local shopping vouchers will take place at 6 o’clock.

Tuesday 1st December

The daily draw for local shopping vouchers will take place at 6 o’clock.

At 8 pm a historical talk on the topic of Michael Davitt will be delivered by Michael Comer in the Gateway Hotel.

Wednesday 2nd December

Daily draw for shopping vouchers and at 7pm The Cultural Centre logo design awards evening will acknowledge and reward all entrants in the recent competition.

Thursday 3rd December

Thursday will be senior citizens day, all day special offers for senior citizens in participating businesses.

At 4pm come and enjoy the Cosy Up To Console Tea Party with entertainment and refreshments in the Gateway Hotel (admission €5).

At 6pm the daily draw for local shopping vouchers will take place.

Friday December 4th

The day starts at 9 o’clock with a Business Networking coffee morning in the Gateway Hotel.

At 6 o’clock is the daily draw for local shopping vouchers.

The fun moves at 7pm to The Community Centre with the inter business bubble football blitz.

Swinford Agricultural Show will host a table quiz in the Gateway Hotel at 9 o’clock.

Saturday December 5th

At 9.30am the Christmas Market will be held in the Cultural Centre.  Tesco will hold their Temple Street Hospital Fundraiser with magical Reindeer food.

3pm Santa will arrive into town from the North Pole with his Grotto opening on Main Street from 3.30pm.

5pm the Town will be illuminated as the Christmas Lights will be switched on with carol singing and the Official Blessing of the outdoor Crib on Main Street.

6pm the big final draw of Swinford Christmas Shopping Promotion for over €1000 in Local Shopping Vouchers will be held.

7pm Swinford’s own Everyday Solution will be live in concert in the Gateway Hotel where they will officially launch their debut single “Keep You Smiling”.  Tickets €10 each or €30 (2 adults +2 children U14).

Doors open at 6pm.

10pm Swinford Golf Club Awards Night will take place in the Gateway Hotel.

Sunday December 6th

9.30am the Christmas Market will be open for a second day in the Cultural Centre with lots of festive treats and lots of ideas on offer.

Christmas Lights 2015

A Church Gate Collection to help defray the costs of this year’s Christmas lights will be taken up on the weekend of Saturday December 12th and Sunday December 13th. All donations greatly appreciated.

 

Declan O’Rourke coming to Swinford

This Saturday 28th November the Cultural Centre is delighted to play host to the one and only Declan O’Rourke.

He is currently touring his brand new studio album since he burst on the scene 10 years ago with “Since Kyabram” Declan is a world renowned songwriter, a gifted instrumentalist and a consummate performer. Paul Weller described his debut single Galileo “as possibly the greatest song written in the last 30 years”.

After returning from a mini tour of the Western States, Swinford Cultural Centre is the first stop on his Irish tour and this is a unique opportunity to catch this world class talent in this wonderful venue.

Tickets cost €20 and are available online at swinfordgaa.ie or at O’Connell’s Pharmacy or the Gateway Hotel.

This concert is sponsored by O’Connell’s Pharmacy and all profits will go to the Swinford Memorial Garden.

Floral Demonstration

Swinford & District Gardening Club are holding a Christmas floral demonstration by Gail of Eden Flowers Kiltimagh in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind.

It will take place at 8pm on Wednesday December 9th in the Gateway Hotel. Tickets are €10.

All arrangements will be raffled on the night in addition there will be other fabulous raffle prizes.

Please support this worthy cause and at the same time have a most enjoyable night out.

Marie Keating Cancer Foundation will be outside O’Donnells Totalhealth Pharmacy, Market Street, Swinford with their Cancer awareness mobile unit from 12 noon to 5 o’clock on Friday November 27th.

 

Swinford Mens Shed

Swinford Mens Shed will hold a meeting in the Gateway Hotel on Thursday 26th November at 8pm to discuss the way forward for the shed.
In attendance will be Joanne Grehan, Director of Services at Mayo County Council, Cllr. Michael Smyth, Cllr. Neil Cruise, Pat Dunne from Scoil Muire agus Padraig, Dolores McNicholas of Mayo North East Leader Partnership and Justin Sammon Chief ExcecutiveOfficer  of Mayo North East Leader Programme.

Swinford Camera Club

Swinford Camera Club’s next meeting is on Wednesday evening 2nd December at 8pm in the Gateway Hotel. New members are always welcome, especially beginners. We would like to welcome all our recent new members to the club. Meetings are held every 1st and 3rd Wednesday night at 8 pm in the conference room of the Gateway Hotel.

Daffodil Bulbs & Hedge Planting This Saturday

Swinford Tidy Towns are looking for help planting bulbs and some hedging, if you have an hour or two to spare this Saturday 28th November. Swinford Tidy Towns will be helping out Swinford Amenity Park committee and Swinford Scouts plant hedging and daffodil bulbs, all along the Amenity Park wall.
This will make a huge difference to the appearance of one of the main entrances into Swinford town. We will be meeting at the Amenity Park at 10 am this Saturdy 28th November. All the heavy groundwork will have been done beforehand by a digger.
All help will be most welcome, thanks.

The annual general meeting of the club will be held in the Gateway Hotel on Sunday 29th November at 6pm.

The carers Association have recently set up a 50/50 draw to support Family Carers in Mayo.
If you have a spare €2 the envelopes are left in a box in Corrib Oil in Swinford.
Half the winnings go towards the envelope picked out and the other half to support Family Carers in Mayo.

This weeks draw for Swinford GAA 50/50 draw was held in Quinns on 24th November and Mary Connolly c/o of Ellen McDonagh won €558.00.

The winning envelope was sold in Swinford National School. Envelopes are available in most business premises and online through www.swinfordgaa.ie where tickets can be purchased in bundles of 10/25/52 weeks.
